PS3 OtherOS cash claims end in April

Lawsuits you, sir.

If you want to cash in on the Sony lawsuit over the PlayStation 3 "OtherOS" controversy from eight years ago, you now have until the middle of April to make your claim.

Way back in 2010, Sony revised the design of the PS3 and quietly removed the OtherOS feature from the console's firmware. This allowed users to install their own operating system on the console - such as Linux - but Sony got cold feet over fears it opened the platform up to nefarious hacking and piracy, and removed the option.

While most players never knew it was there, some purchased the machine precisely because of this capability and were understandably annoyed that Sony removed the feature without warning. A class action lawsuit followed, which Sony settled in 2016.

The time limit on that settlement is fast approaching, however. If you can prove you purchased a PlayStation 3 before the OtherOS feature was removed, and can make a compelling argument that the removal of the feature caused you financial harm, then you have until April 15 to submit a claim. Don't get too excited though - the compensation is just $65 per claimant, although that would at least buy one new game for whatever console you now own, all these years later.
