Poor Reception of No Man's Sky Prompts Surge of Refunds

Various internet retailers are making exceptions to their standard refund policies for No Man’s Sky.

As large and ambitious as it was, Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky didn’t quite live up to the lofty expectations that were set for it by fans. Because of this, the resulting backlash has been so overwhelming that certain retailers are granting refund requests even if they fall outside their usual refund parameters.

According to a recent thread on NeoGAF, online retailers including Amazon, Steam, GoG, Humble Bundle, and the PlayStation Store have been granting refund requests for No Man’s Sky even when the person requesting the refund doesn’t fit into their normal descriptor for a refund recipient. While not all refund requests are being granted, several users have reported success even if they didn’t qualify for a refund.

For example, Steam normally grants a refund only if a customer has played the game for less than a total of two hours and has owned the game for less than two weeks. Sony says that digital PSN games can be refunded within 14 days of purchase as long as the user hasn’t downloaded the game to their console. Amazon, meanwhile, has a straightforward “no refunds” policy for digital games.

However, all three companies also state that they will review individual refund requests on a case-by-case basis, and No Man’s Sky buyers who requested refunds through all three services have reported success, even in cases where they played the game for as much as 50 hours before requesting the refund. While there are no guarantees, it sounds like this is the time to request a refund for No Man’s Sky if you’re unsatisfied with the game. Some users even suggest making more than one request if your first one is denied, as they have had subsequent requests granted.
