Thanks to a host of end-of-the-year sales, more and more players are finding their way into the welcoming realm of Stardew Valley. While the main premise of the game is to maintain and grow your farm, there are ways to interact both positively and negatively with the NPC community around you.
If you’ve never played Stardew Valley and are wondering how marriage (and subsequent divorce) could ever enter the picture, simply picture Skyrim’s Hearthfire expansion. You can romance an eligible NPC in Stardew Valley by reaching a "best friends" status (10 hearts) with them and complete a few easy steps to marry them (if you're here, you've likely already done this). Furthermore, the two of you can even have kids!
Unfortunately, with marriage comes complications. Let’s say you no longer feel that spark with your Stardew mate and wish to make a change. Well, you can do so by divorcing them. If that’s not enough, you can even remove your children from existence (it’s as grim as it sounds).
If you’re looking for a divorce, you’ve come to the right place! Here’s how to get a divorce in Stardew Valley.
How to Get a Divorce
First, head to the Mayor’s Manor (home of Lewis) and interact with a book on display. Upon interaction with the book, an option to get a divorce will pop up. In order to get a divorce, you’ll need to fork over 50,000 gold. If you change your mind, you have until the end of the day to cancel.
However, if your resolve is firm and you choose not to cancel the action, your spouse will return to their original home, friendship between them will reset to 0, and all future interactions will be hostile.
At this point, any children you’ve had with your spouse will remain in your Farmhouse unless you choose to take things a step further.
How to Remove Children and Erase Memories
After you get a divorce in Stardew Valley, you have a few more options open to you. Should you choose the dark side of the Force, here’s how to permanently rid yourself of your children and erase your spouse’s memories just like that movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
First, complete the Community Center and

Once you’ve placated the Henchman, the path through the Witch’s Swamp will be clear. Continue on to find the Witch's Hut, which contains three Shrines and a Teleportation Rune.
Two of these Shrines allow you to alter your ex-spouse’s memories and rid yourself of your children, the third will spawn monsters on your Farm.
- At the Dark Shrine of Memory, spend 30,000 gold to erase your ex-spouse’s memories which will enable you to date and remarry them.
- At the Dark Shrine of Selfishness, give up a Prismatic Shard and rid yourself of your children forever. Yes, this action is permanent.
- At the Dark Shrine of Night Terrors, exchange a Strange Bun to have monsters spawn on your Farm. Works for all Farm maps, including Wilderness.
Note that Prismatic Shards are very rare and can only be obtained as drops from Serpents, Mummies, Shadow Brutes, Shadow Shamans, and Wilderness Golems so removing your kids from existence will be a costly action (not just in its cruelty).
