How to Find a Prismatic Shard in Stardew Valley

Ways to find those elusive Prismatic Shards in Stardew Valley.

There are several ways to find a Prismatic Shard in Stardew Valley. However, some methods yield better drops than others. Many players will search for weeks on end for Prismatic Shards and remain hopelessly empty-handed.

The Prismatic Shard is highly coveted not only for its rarity, but becomes it is required to craft the Galaxy Sword. If you have had no luck finding a Prismatic Shard and ache to add a Galaxy Sword to your Stardew Valley inventory, don’t fret.

Below, we’ve listed some of the best ways to find a Prismatic Shard in Stardew Valley!

Mine for a Prismatic Shard

The Skull Cavern holds many secrets.

The easiest way to find a Prismatic Shard (that we’ve come across) is mining for them in the Skull Cavern. If you wish to mine for Prismatic Shards in the Skull Cavern, you will first need to reach the bottom of The Mines at level 120 and find the Skull Key.

Once you’ve found the Skull Key, use it to unlock a cave in the northwest portion of The Calico Desert which leads to the Skull Cavern. The Skull Cavern contains Iridium Nodes and Omni Geodes, both of which can drop a Prismatic Shard.

Iridium Nodes will be dark purple and covered in light blue spikes.

Their frequency will increase every 10 floors down you go in the Skull Cavern, giving you more chances to mine them for a Prismatic Shard. Mining Iridium Nodes is the best way to find a Prismatic Shard in Stardew Valley.

The deeper you go in the Skull Cavern the more Iridium Nodes you'll find.

Additionally, you can mine Omni Geodes which will display as grey rocks covered in rainbow flecks. However, their drop rate for Prismatic Shards (1/250) is much lower than the drop rate of Iridium Nodes. We recommend mining both whenever you come across them in the Skull Cavern to increase your chances of finding a Prismatic Shard.

Kill Monsters for a Prismatic Shard

The Mines are crawling with monsters!

Various monsters will drop a Prismatic Shard in Stardew Valley, these monsters include Serpent, Mummy, Shadow Brute, Shadow Shaman, and Wilderness Golem. Each monster will have a different drop rate percentage for Prismatic Shards. Here are the drop rate percentages for each one:

  • Serpent: 0.01% (increases to 0.4% when the player has reached the bottom of The Mines)
  • Mummy: 0.01% (increases to 0.4% when the player has reached the bottom of The Mines)
  • Shadow Brute: 0.05% (increases to 0.4% when the player has reached the bottom of The Mines)
  • Shadow Shaman: 0.05% (increases to 0.4% when the player has reached the bottom of The Mines)
  • Wilderness Golem: 0% (increases to 0.4% when the player has reached the bottom of The Mines)

As stated above, you will need to reach the bottom of The Mines to unlock the Skull Cavern. As you’re making your way through The Mines, be sure to kill Shadow Brutes and Shadow Shamans.

Wilderness Golems will occasionally spawn at your Farm but are useless to you unless you’ve reached the bottom of The Mines.

If you've reached the bottom of The Mines in Stardew Valley, the Wilderness Golem may drop a Prismatic Shard!

While in the Skull Cavern mining Iridium Nodes and Omni Geodes for Prismatic Shards, be sure to kill any Serpent or Mummy you see and keep pressing onward. Eventually, you will find a Prismatic Shard.

What Can I Do With a Prismatic Shard?

Now that I have a Prismatic Shard, what should I do?

After tireless mining and monster slaying, you now have a Prismatic Shard and may be wondering what you can do with it. Well, the first thing many players use a Prismatic Shard for is crafting the Galaxy Sword.

To craft a Galaxy Sword with your Prismatic Shard, head over to The Three Pillars located in the northeast portion of The Calico Desert. Once you've found The Three Pillars, take your Prismatic Shard and stand on the center tile between The Three Pillars.

Doing this will remove a Prismatic Shard from your inventory and replace it with the Galaxy Sword.

Unlock the Galaxy Sword in The Calico Desert by exchanging a Prismatic Shard.

Once you’ve unlocked the Galaxy Sword, the Galaxy Hammer and Galaxy Dagger will also unlock. You can obtain these (and another Galaxy Sword) from Marlon.

The cost to purchase another Galaxy Sword from Marlon is 50,000 gold, a Galaxy Hammer will set you back 75,000 gold, and a Galaxy Dagger is priced at 35,000 gold.
