How To Catch Ditto in Pokémon GO

Learn how to find and catch the elusive Ditto in Niantic’s Pokémon GO.

If you’re wondering how to catch Ditto in Pokémon GO, you’ve come to the right place. While the main thing to remember when catching Ditto is to always remain patient, there are a few steps you can take to up your odds of finding Ditto.

Below, we’ve outlined a few tips on how to catch Ditto in Pokémon GO.

Step 1: Stock up on Poke Balls

Keep a large supply of Poké Balls on hand when trying to catch Ditto in Pokémon GO.

The first step in catching Ditto in Pokémon GO is to stock up on Poké Balls. Having a plentiful supply of Poké Balls on hand is crucial, as Ditto hides behind the guise of other Pokémon. For example, when we caught Ditto they were disguised as a CP10 Pidgey.

Because of this, you need to be continuously catching Pokémon to up your odds of finding Ditto. With the Pokémon GO driving limitations in place, you’ll need to walk (or bike) around an area with a variety of PokéStops to collect your items.

Try to find an area like a park or tourist location with several PokéStops in place. That way you only need to confine yourself to one area rather than wandering aimlessly.

Step 2: Use a Razz Berry

To prevent your hidden Ditto from fleeing before you can catch it, use a Razz Berry. Niantic has increased the likelihood of Pokémon fleeing from battle (especially commons like Pidgey). In an ironic turn of events, the one Pokémon you never wanted to catch is now a Pokémon you’ll be hunting down until you finally catch Ditto.

Prevent Pidgey from fleeing by feeding it a Razz Berry.

Unfortunately, when we were trying to catch Ditto, we experienced these common Pokémon fleeing the encounter before we could successfully catch them—sometimes right after the first Poké Ball is thrown! It can be agonizing to wonder if the Pokémon that fled was a Ditto in disguise.

Catch every Pidgey you encounter to up your odds of finding Ditto in Pokémon GO.

To up your odds of catching Ditto in Pokémon GO, be sure to throw a Razz Berry during the beginning of the encounter. Next, throw a Poké Ball. If it breaks free, use another Razz Berry and try again. You don’t want to waste all of your Razz Berries, so if you’re running low, only use one Razz Berry in the beginning to prevent the Pokémon from fleeing after your first Poké Ball throw.

Step 3: Catch Em’ All

Keep catching common Pokémon until you catch Ditto.

The phrase “gotta catch em’ all” holds true for catching Ditto in Pokémon GO. Because Ditto hides behind the masks of other Pokémon, you’re unable to know which Pokémon is a Ditto.

If you have a healthy supply of items on hand, catch everything that spawns around you (especially those pesky Pidgeys). How do you know you’ve caught Ditto?

After the Pokémon is successfully captured, a prompt will pop up in a similar manner to when an Egg hatches. The game will say “Oh?” and the Pokémon will transform itself into a Ditto and register in your Pokédex.
