Indie Horror Games of 2016

This year, we played some horrifying indie games that gave us nightmares for weeks.

The year of 2016 was undoubtedly filled with indie horror games that kept us from getting a good night's rest. One could say that the ability to leave a lasting impression is a mark of great horror, or a fragile mind. Either way, here's 5 terrifying titles we encourage you to play with all the lights off.

Through The Woods

Take a terrifying walk through a Norwegian folktale with Through The Woods. It follows a mother and her search for her missing son, as she explores the dark shadowy depths of the woods, and confronts situations you’ve only heard about in stories like Grimm's Fairy Tales. This survival horror game relies heavily on atmosphere, superb sound design, and great story building to deliver a truly horrifying experience.

Layers Of Fear

There’s something special about a game that can send chills down your spine with the atmosphere alone. Layers of Fear does this exceptionally well. It’s a walking simulator that allows you to explore a large Victorian style house. You’ll fill the shoes of an artist driven mad by his own desire to finish his biggest and best work of art. As he starts to lose his mind, the world around him begins to take the shape into something unlike reality. Something that is far more menacing.

Araya

Jump scares, thrilling chase scenes, and paranormal activity await you in Araya. This game will challenge you to face your fears and explore an abandoned Thai Hospital where you’ll piece together the clues surround a mystery of what happened to a girl who was brutally murdered. If you want to take it one step further, this game offers VR support for the Oculus, so you can experience these traumatically terrifying events first hand.

The Brookhaven Experiment

In The Brookhaven Experiment, you’ll venture through a post-apocalyptic world where you’ll face off against terrifying monsters. You’ll have to do your best to survive while trying to uncover the truth about an experiment gone terribly wrong. The Brookhaven Experiment is not for the weak at heart, as it’s an FPS VR game, with gameplay centered around surviving waves of enemies using various weapons, items and tools. Prepare for jump scares, violence, blood, and gore.

Five Nights At Freddy’s: Sister Location

Five Nights at Freddy’s fans earned their long awaited continuation to the series with Sister Location. In lieu of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, this game takes place at Circus Baby’s Pizza World where more cursed animatronics patiently wait for their next victim. Unlike the previous games in the FNAF franchise, this game takes a different route, giving players a more varied horror experience each night. Scott Cawthon seems to have mastered the art of horror, so if you’re looking for a fun game with a good scare, then Sister Location is a safe bet.

We can't wait to see what the new year brings for indie horror games, especially with titles such as Outlast 2, Friday The 13th: The Game and Visage, we're sure that there'll be no shortage of jump scares and chilling atmospheres to go around.
