Hollow Knight: Overcharmed Status and What it Means

Find out the pros and cons of being overcharmed in Hollow Knight.

During a visit Salubra in Hollow Knight, she’ll warn you that there are consequences to equipping too many charms at the same time. Whether you’ve managed to do it in a haste or out of sheer curiosity, you might be wondering why you’ve been marked as overcharmed.

Note the purple overcharmed notches.

As you know, each charm you find requires a certain amount of notches to equip. Some require more than others. In Hollow Knight, you can purchase up to 7 notches which are not that many considering how many awesome charms there are in this game.

If you don’t have the required amount of notches free to equip a particular charm, you’ll be able to add it by clicking on it at least 5 times. This will exceed the number of notches you have available and render you overcharmed.

When you’ve reached this status, you are susceptible to taking double the amount of damage from enemies. It’s worth noting that you will still receive the benefits of the charm, and no matter how many notches over that minimum you go, you’ll still only take twice the damage.

This can be both a good thing or a bad thing.

If you’re the type of player who has mastered the art of combat and is great at avoiding enemy blows, then taking double damage won’t affect you nearly as badly as the player who is less skilled in their battles. On the contrary, you’ll be able to reap the benefits of the additional charm with a clear conscious.

Being in an overcharmed state is only worrisome when you know that you’re one to take lots of damage during enemy encounters in Hollow Knight. If you’re one of those people, then it might be in your best interest to unequip the extra charm.
