PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Is Getting Battle Royale Cosmetic Items

A fitting tribute to the film that inspired the game.

If you ever looked at Bluehole’s popular shooter game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and thought to yourself, “Huh, that game’s premise sure sounds a lot like the movie Battle Royale,” that’s not a coincidence.

The game’s concept is directly inspired by the iconic Japanese film in which a group of students duke it out in bloody fashion, and now Bluehole is aiming to pay tribute to the film with a series of new cosmetic items.

According to Bluehole, three new item crates will be added to PUBG on August 3rd as a sort of test run for the eventual implementation of a more expansive character creation/customization system which the developer plans to implement at a later date.

The first two crates, the Wanderer Crate and Survivor Crate, can be purchased with Battle Points and have a chance of containing both standard clothing items as well as a new series of outfits that are directly inspired by Battle Royale.

If a player wants the highest chance of getting the new Battle Royale items, however, they’ll have to purchase the third new crate type: Gamescom Invitational Crates. These crates will cost $2.50 of real-life currency to open and, as their name infers, proceeds from those $2.50 purchases will help support the upcoming Gamescom PUB Invitational that’s set to be held later in August.

According to this Steam post which contains images of all the available outfits, certain outfits can only be found in certain crates, so be sure to look through it if there’s a particular outfit you’re eyeing.

The post also confirms that the Gamescom International Crate will only be available until August 27th, after which point it will be taken out and PUBG will go back to a purely free-to-open crate system. All three new crate types will also be tradeable via the Steam Community Market.
