There are many ways in which Sonic Mania functions as a tribute to the old-school games that inspired it, and one such way is a hidden level select feature that allows you to instantly warp to any level in the game.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to unlock the level select feature in Sonic Mania.
Sonic Mania - How to Unlock Level Select
If you want to unlock Sonic Mania’s level select feature in the “legitimate” fashion, all you need to do is play through the game normally and beat every single level along the way.
Once you’ve done this, you can navigate to any level you desire by accessing your save file and then browsing the different levels by pressing up and down on your controller. The only caveat is that, when you select a level, you automatically have to start in Act 1 of that level and proceed to subsequent acts by beating previous ones.
The other method when it comes to unlocking level select allows you to instantly access any specific level and act without having to first beat them through normal gameplay progression. As you might have already guessed, this second level select method is accessed via a secret cheat code.
The specific method and code input differs depending on the platform you’re playing on, but so far we know of the following methods.
Unlock Level Select on Nintendo Switch
To unlock level select in Sonic Mania on the Nintendo Switch, simply navigate to the main menu and then press/hold down the B and Y buttons. Keep doing so until the game automatically sends you back to the main menu.
Then, wait until the “press any button to start” prompt comes up and press the start button when it does. If you did everything correctly, you should be taken to a level select menu in Sonic Mania where you can pick and choose from any of the game’s levels and acts.
Unlock Level Select on PlayStation 4/Xbox One
Sadly, as of the time of this writing, a guaranteed way of accessing the hidden level select menu in Sonic Mania on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One has yet to be uncovered. However, unverified reports suggest that heading over to the main menu and inputting the following button sequences should work:
- PS4: Hold Square and press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Left, Right, X, O
- Xbox One: Hold X and press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B
