In a press release, Atari revealed that they plan on launching the Ataribox in spring 2018 through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign that starts this fall. The Ataribox is expected to cost between $250 to $300 USD, depending on the editions and specifications available.

Ataribox has a sleek, modern design based on the look of the classic Atari 2600. There’s even a wood version with a real wood panel on the front. The new Atari home console will contain a custom AMD processor with Radeon graphics, and will feature streaming, web browsing, and social applications alongside its gaming capabilities.

The Ataribox will run Linux as its operating system, with a TV-ready user interface. “People are used to the flexibility of a PC, but most connected TV devices have closed systems and content stores,” says Ataribox General Manager, Feargal Mac. “Ataribox is an open system, and while our user interface will be easy to use, people will also be free to access and customize the underlying OS.”

As far as games go, the Ataribox will support modern PC games along with classic Atari titles that the publisher is known for. “We wanted to create an open system, a killer product where people can game, stream and browse with as much freedom as possible. Atari games and content will be available as well as games and content from other providers,” said Atari CEO, Fred Chesnais.
