Fortnite: Can You Play Local Split Screen Co-op?

Players everywhere want to know: is there split screen multiplayer in Fortnite?

Whether you brave the horde in Save the World or strive for victory in Battle Royale, Fortnite is all about coordinating with fellow teammates online to survive the storm. The variety of character classes and gameplay mechanics allow players to cater to their personal play style while complimenting the skills and capabilities of other player's characters. It seems natural for a game like Fornite to offer local split screen co-op for players who want to battle Husks or conquer Duos side-by-side with their friend.

As perfect as couch co-op would be for a game like this, Fortnite does not currently support local split screen multiplayer. If you want to play Fortnite Battle Royale or Save the World with a friend, you will each need to connect online separately.

However, Fortnite is currently in paid Early Access, which means there’s still time for Epic Games to add new features like local split screen co-op to the game. Just look at Fortnite Battle Royale, for example. Fortnite originally focused solely on its PvE mode, until the developers decided to toss in the Battle Royale game mode for free, which turned out to be one of the best things they could have done for the game in terms of attracting new players.

While you shouldn’t rule out the possibility of local split screen co-op in Fortnite just yet, it’s important to note that adding local split screen to Fortnite might require some adjustments, mainly involving how items are displayed on screen. Though not impossible, Epic would need to come up with an elegant way to reduce the items on the HUD without sacrificing important details. Fortnite could take notes from games like Divinity: Original Sin 2, which did a good job at cutting down the necessary display items for local split screen co-op.

Fortnite is scheduled to launch sometime in 2018, where it will become a free-to-play title. Hopefully split screen multiplayer will find its way into the game, at least for PvE. We'll keep you up to date with any new details regarding local split screen co-op in Fortnite.
