Tencent Is Making A PUBG-Style Battle Royale Mobile Game

Epic 100-player battles in the palm of your hand.

Considering how successful games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite Battle Royale have proven (and are continuing to prove) to be, it’s certainly not surprising in the least that other companies would want to jump in on the trend. One of those companies happens to be the Chinese conglomerate Tencent, but rather than just make yet another console or PC-based battle royale shooter, Tencent is trying something a little different by taking the battle royale formula and applying it to mobile platforms.

Tencent recently unveiled a countdown timer which would count down to a new game reveal taking place today, November 8. From the start, it was clear that the new game would be a battle royale-style title, but other than that no additional details were shared. Well, the timer reached zero earlier today, and as gaming insider Daniel Ahmad revealed via Twitter, the full unveiling confirmed that Tencent’s battle royale venture will in fact be a mobile game called Glorious Mission.

According to Ahmad’s tweets, Glorious Mission will feature 100-player battles in an open landscape with players parachuting in at the beginning of each match (sound familiar?). It remains to be seen how well the survival and shooting mechanics that drive battle royale-style games will translate over to mobile platforms, but we won’t have to wait long to find out since Tencent will apparently launch a beta at some point in the near future.

Interestingly enough, Tencent is already profiting quite nicely from the whole battle royale craze since it happens to own a five percent stake in PUBG developer Bluehole *and* a 40 percent controlling stake in Fortnite developer Epic Games. If Glorious Mission proves to be a hit, then Tencent will really have all of the major platforms covered for battle royale games: PC, console, and mobile devices.
