Cloudgine Acquired by Epic Games

Cloudgine's credits include Crackdown 3’s destructible multiplayer environments.

Cloudgine has officially been purchased by studio Epic Games, who already have plans to put it to good use alongside their Unreal Engine 4. If Cloudgine sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the same cloud processing tech responsible for the fun, destructible environments found in Crackdown 3’s multiplayer.

Addressing the acquisition, Dana Cowley (senior marketing manager of Epic Games) stated:

“Since its inception, Cloudgine’s research and development has been based on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4. Cloudgine’s cloud computing and online technologies will enhance the UE4 feature set to help developers push the creative and technical limits of games, film, animation, and visualization through advances in physics simulation and networking.”

With Epic working to merge Cloudgine with UE4, the company has reportedly decided to begin hiring at the Cloudgine offices located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how Epic utilizes Cloudgine in the future, especially with games like Fortnite seeing rapid popularity growth.

Do you think Epic will incorporate Cloudgine into games like Fortnite, or will they simply wait and put the technology to use in future projects? Let us know your thoughts on Epic’s purchase of Cloudgine down in the comments below!
