Former president of Sony Online Entertainment comments on Fortnite issue

John Smedley touched upon why he thinks Sony has decided against cross-platform support for Fortnite.

The Fortnite issue rages on, with gamers having differing opinions when it comes to Sony and their lack of support for PS4 Fortnite accounts on Nintendo Switch. Now, John Smedley, former president of Sony Online Entertainment, has shed some light on the issue. Apparently, the root of the cause is money.

“When I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money,” explained Smedley on Twitter. “They didn’t like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a PlayStation. Simple as that. Dumb reason, but there it is.”

According to Smedley, Sony’s policy on cross-platform support could change given enough pressure from consumers. This is because Fortnite isn’t the first instance of backlash in regards to failed cross-platform support. Games like Rocket League and Minecraft have experienced similar issues on Sony platforms, though the pushback wasn’t nearly as strong as it has been with Fortnite.

Again, everything boils down to money. If consumers decided to stop supporting Sony financially due to the Fortnite issue, this could inspire the company to correct the problem. It’s not a guarantee, but judging by Smedley’s comments, the best way to get through to Sony is by talking business. What do you think? Should Sony change their cross-platform policy?
