Best War Movies of All Time

Here's our picks for the best war movies, ever.

Black Hawk Down

Black Hawk Down (2001)

Based on a true story, Black Hawk Down depicts an infamous raid in Mogadishu where an elite set of American soldiers are dropped into Somalia on a mission to capture a Somali warlord. As you would expect, things don’t go according to plan. The soldiers are left to fend for their lives after being overrun by Somali forces. Black Hawk Down features a cast of notable actors and even nabbed a few Academy Awards back in the day, so we couldn’t leave this one off our list of best war movies.

Full Metal Jacket

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

A classic Kubrick favorite, Full Metal Jacket follows a platoon of U.S. Marines as they go through boot camp training with a vulgar drill instructor. Later in the film, we see how the Marines hold up on the battlefield during the Vietnam War. The film reflects on the psychological impact of war, showing just how brutal the experience can be for some.

Though a serious film throughout, the dark humor of Sgt. Hartman’s crass insults leave us with some memorable quotes, including “I will unscrew your head and s*** down your neck,” and “I bet you could suck a golf ball through a garden hose,” to name a few. Our list of the best war movies wouldn’t be complete without this Kubrick classic.
