Best War Movies of All Time

Here's our picks for the best war movies, ever.

Apocalypse Now

Apocalypse Now (1979)

Inspired by the Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now is hailed by many as one of the best war films ever made, and our very own Nate Hohl chose it as his personal favorite. Apocalypse Now focuses on an Army Captain in the Vietnam War who is tasked with assassinating a Colonel who has gone insane and commands a troop in Cambodia.

Violence, fear, and insanity are prevalent themes throughout the film, symbolizing the maddening nature of the Vietnam War itself. Apocalypse Now is a different flavor of war film given its stylized elements, but the precedent it sets for other films in the genre is undeniable.

Platoon

Platoon (1986)

Platoon differs from many other war films in that it attempts to convey a more realistic account of what war is actually like, from the perspective of a soldier. The film is written and directed by Oliver Stone, who served in Vietnam and used his own experiences as the basis for Platoon.

Stone captures the disorienting, harrowing nature of combat with scenes crafted from his memories as an infantryman. Platoon offers a considerably raw, genuine take on war films and deserves to be among the best war movies of all time.
