Grand Theft Auto V surpasses 85m sales, overthrowing Wii Sports

The game that just won't stop selling.

Grand Theft Auto V has passed a phenomenal milestone, with over 85 million copies shipped — more than Wii Sports.

Rockstar’s latest in the GTA series just won’t stop selling units, with more than 10m sold this year alone — incredible numbers for a game first released in 2013. Surpassing Wii Sports (82.83m sales) is an especially notable achievement considering the Wii title came bundled with consoles, greatly amplifying its sales.

Hardware provides some indication as to the game’s success, as analyst Daniel Ahmad noted that sales for GTA V tie in quite closely with PlayStation and Xbox console sales, indicating many people purchase the game with new hardware.
