God of War Reveal at E3 2016

By Larryn Bell

This one should be easy for most gamers to remember, as it happened at the most recent E3. In 2016, Sony’s PlayStation E3 Press conference ended up arguably stealing the show, which can be partially attributed to it’s incredibly strong opening.

The Sony press conference started off with a rumble, as deep drums and baritone singers opened with an ominous tune. Sony opted to have Bear McCreary conduct a live orchestra to perform all the music for their E3 presentation, which certainly set a classy tone.  The gritty opening song sounded familiar, but it wasn't until the first gameplay trailer that fans realized what that song was for.

After the music ended, a crisp bit of gameplay began on the stage screen, with no introduction other than the opening score. The gameplay showed a child in a rustic, snowy setting sitting outside a cabin. We hear a deep voice speak from the shadows as the boy enters the house, telling the child about his mother’s hunting knife.

Moments later, a foreboding figure emerges from the darkness, revealing himself to be none other than Kratos. The beard wasn’t enough to throw off fans, as the crowd cheered vigorously when Kratos steps into the light. It was in that moment that fans realized there would be a new God of War game to look forward to, which was certainly cause for excitement.

The gameplay trailer continued on for another ten minutes or so, showcasing the new Norse setting for the game and revealing Kratos’s unconventional parenting skills. The God of War opening certainly left a lasting impression, and served to kick off one of the best E3 presentations of 2016.
