Destiny 2 - How to Unlock Subclasses

Unlock your second and third subclasses in Destiny 2.

When you first start Destiny 2, you will only have access to a single subclass. This lone subclass will get you through the majority of the campaign, but it might not be your favorite. Each Class is able to unlock a second and third subclass in Destiny 2, but you must first reach a few specific points in the story.

How to Unlock Second Subclass

Unlocking more subclasses in Destiny 2 is an easy process, but it requires a lot of work and farming. In order to unlock your Class’ second subclass (Voidwalker, Gunslinger, Striker), you will need to earn enough experience to reach Level 9. If you’re struggling to level up quickly, check out our guide on how to level up fast in Destiny 2.

Unlocking the second subclass requires finding a special quest item for your class.

Once you reach Level 9, head to the European Dead Zone and kill high profile enemies. These enemies are easily recognized by their segmented health blocks and when killed, drop loot chests. At Level 9, these loot chests have a chance of having a Relic for your next Subclass.

A new mission will appear on your map when the Quest Item is charged.

When you see that you have collected the Relic, check your Character screen to see what subclass it’s associated with. This Relic will also tell you what you must do in order to full charge it. Typically, the quest is to defeat enemies and fight alongside other players in Public Events. The second subclass in Destiny 2 can be earned once this bar reaches 100%. At this point, you will need to play a special mission that takes you back to the Shard of the Traveler.

How to Unlock Third Subclass

After you have the second subclass, you will be able to unlock your third and final subclass for your character, either the Stormcaller, Nightstalker, or Sunbreaker. But to do this, you must first reach Level 14. Once you hit the desired level, head back to the EDZ and kill high priority enemies or participate in Public Events.

The third subclass is unlocked in the same way as the second subclass, but takes more time to complete.

Eventually, you will receive another Relic for the third subclass, either by opening a loot chest or as a drop from an enemy. This Relic has the same quest as the first one, but you will need to kill even more enemies than before. You may find yourself doing upwards of five Public Events to complete this Relic.

Use the plants to fully charge your Super to help clear the waves.

Fully charging the Relic unlocks a mission where you must venture back into the forest to the Shard of the Traveler. Commune with the Shard to unlock the last subclass. As with the second subclass, you will need to defeat several waves of enemies, but this is made easier thanks to the glowing plants that offer the Boundless Light buff. This buff quickly recharges your Super energy.

Now that you have all three Subclasses, you will need to know how to earn more Upgrade Points to fully explore all perk clusters. Take a look at Tank War Room’s Destiny 2 hub for more content!
