All new features and details for No Man's Sky Next

Learn the details on every feature and full patch list for No Man's Sky's NEXT update.

Hello Games has just released a new trailer for the upcoming Next DLC for No Man’s Sky, and it’s fair to say the game has come a long way since its troubled launch in August 2016. Developer Hello Games has worked hard in filling out the game’s weaker aspects, while adding a wealth of brand new content for players to explore. Since launch, No Man’s Sky has received new ships, base-building, fast travel, a storyline, pseudo-multiplayer, a photo mode and countless quality of life changes.

That’s a lot of new things to do and see, so it means a lot then for Hello Games to claim that NEXT will be the most important and substantial addition to No Man’s Sky so far. While we don’t know all the details just yet, Hello Games has teased us with a fair few details as we wait for the 24th. Here’s everything we know so far.

No Man’s Sky Next features and details

The only look at No Man’s Sky Next in action we’ve had is in the newly released trailer. While it’s only short, we get a first look at the new multiplayer in action, with multiple, suited players running and flying across a planet’s surface. Check it out below:

Where and when will Next release?

No Man’s Sky’s biggest update yet, Next will be released on July 24. The update is arriving free for all platforms, and that includes the Xbox One. The game will release for the first time on Xbox One on July 24 and includes all the free additions the game has received so far, as well as the Next update. The Xbox version will also include One X support with higher resolutions.

What’s included in No Man’s Sky Next?

The biggest news regarding Next is something many players have been waiting for since before the game launched: multiplayer. Hello Games has described the update as bringing a “full multiplayer experience.” That may be a little vague, but from what we’ve been able to gleam, that means you’ll be able to play the game in 2-4 player co-op. There will also be multiplayer beyond this, but we’re not sure how many players can appear in a single instance.

Hello Games said you’ll be “able to explore the universe with a small group of friends, or bump into random travelers.” We imagine this will allow a similar number of players to the game’s current multiplayer, which shows up to 15 other players as floating orbs when nearby. There’s no word on how the game will match you together as of yet, but considering the emphasis on co-op play, we expect you’ll be able to join a party with your friends to make sure you’re in the same universe.

New activities

As for new features to enjoy with your friends, Hello Games has teased us there too. It seems we’ll be able to play the survival mode together by working cooperatively or hunting down other players to steal their much needed goods. Multiplayer space dogfights are also on the menu as well as — and most interestingly — races.

In their Next update post, Hello Games said players can “race exocraft across weird alien terrains, creating race tracks and trails to share online.” This sounds like some form of creation tools will also be arriving with Next, which should make for some extremely exciting new community-made additions to the game in the months to come. Imagine building a fantastic new racecourse before sharing the planet coordinates with your pals and others to let them give it a test run.

New stuff

Those who’ve been heavily invested in No Man’s Sky since launch will likely have been eagerly following the Waking Titan ARG Hello Games has been running, teasing new additions. Dedicated members of the community have worked hard to solve numerous puzzles, revealing various tidbits we can expect to arrive in Next. Revealed so far have been the addition of ringed planets to the game, a new ship type and audio clues which refer to a Capital ship. Current theories speculate that this new ship may be a designed for co-op play, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Recent audio releases from the ARG also indicate some new egg-based enemies will be coming to the game along with audio logs to find. The Waking Titan Twitch account is currently running a permanent stream showing bios for a range of dreamers from the ARG, with one final reveal expected before Next launches.

Anything else?

A range of further quality of life tweaks are also expected to arrive in Next including updates to audio and visuals. Beyond that, we’re almost certain Hello Games has kept a few more features up their sleeves. Since the backlash following No Man’s Sky’s launch, Hello Games has remained incredibly reserved and reticent to comment on how much we can expect in each update for the game. Next marks the first time they’re really spoken out about the game, describing it as a “massive” update on the physical Xbox version. For them to speak so strongly about the update implies we really can expect quite a lot to arrive
