Watch Just Cause 4's new Apex engine in action

Boom, shake, shake, shake the room.

The Just Cause series has always focused on environmental mayhem, but with Just Cause 3 back in 2015 it felt like developer Avalanche was running ahead of what its technology would allow. The game was blighted by low frame rates, sluggish loading times and other snags that sapped the fun out of the bombastic explosions.

Well, hopefully the Avalanche team has solved that problem in time for Just Cause 4, due this December. The studio has created the Apex game engine from scratch, with the express purpose of delivering the over-the-top action that Just Cause fans expect.

Here's the promotional video for the new engine.

We'd have preferred a little more gameplay and less talking head interviews, but what we do get to see looks incredibly promising. Gorgeous scenery! Dynamic weather, including tornados and sandstorms! What appears to be almost science fiction level weaponry! Many, many towers and gas tanks exploding!

Has Avalanche pulled it off? We'll find out on December 4, when Just Cause returns on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
