How to join the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim

Become a deadly hired assassin in Skyrim by finding the Dark Brotherhood.

The Dark Brotherhood is one of the most notorious secret societies in the Elder Scrolls series, and fans of the hidden sect of assassins will be pleased to hear it makes a return in Skyrim. Joining the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim isn’t as easy as finding an innocent person to kill, it’s a little more involved than it was in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

How to Join the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim

Joining the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim can be started by learning about a character called Aventus Aretino. This character is attempting to summon the Dark Brotherhood by performing the Black Sacrament ritual.

You can learn about Aventus Aretino by speaking with innkeepers around the realm and asking about any gossip they may have heard. They might tell you of Aventus and what he’s doing in Windhelm.

Another means of hearing about Aventus Aretino is by speaking to Maul in Riften. You can find Maul standing to the left of the city entrance or in Mistveil Keep if Maven Black-Briar is Jarl. You will need to pay Maul for any information regarding the Dark Brotherhood.

You can also speak with the orphans in Honorhall Orphanage in Riften. The children will speak of Aventus Aretino and his plans to kill a Grelod the Kind by hiring the Dark Brotherhood.

Once you have this information, you can find Aventus Aretino in his Windhelm home. Speaking with him grants you access to the Innocence Lost quest. After killing Grelod the Kind and completing the Innocence Lost quest, wait 24 hours and you will be contacted by the Dark Brotherhood.

Sleep in any bed and upon waking up, you will find yourself abducted by the Dark Brotherhood. In the room with you are four other people, Astrid (an assassin of the Dark Brotherhood), and three potential victims. You will need to kill one, two, or all of the victims in order to join the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim.

Now that you've become a deadly assassin by joining the Dark Brotherhood, take some time to learn how to use Amiibos in Skyrim so you can unlock the Legend of Zelda gear!
