Pokémon Sun Ultra Sun and Moon include a heartfelt tribute to Satoru Iwata

A nod to the wonderful past president.

A tribute to the late Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, is included in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

If you want to see it yourself, you’ll need to head to the HeaHea City offices of Game Freak (in the game, not real life). Serebii.net details the full requirements, but simply you’ll need to be carrying a critter from the Virtual Console Pokémon Silver in your team and speak to Morimoto.

Morimoto will give a bit of trivia about each game depending on which Pokémon you’re holding. Here’s the full quote if you’re holding one from Silver.

“When we were having trouble fitting all the data in for Gold and Silver, and we were really in a pinch, this amazing guy came along and made a program for us that solved all our problems. He went on to become the amazing president of a real big company soon after that, too.”

The tale is one well known among Pokémon fans. Iwata wanted Gold and Silver to include the full Kanto region from the original titles, and so came up with a new way to compress the data onto the Game Boy cartridge for that purpose.

Satoru Iwata was a greatly loved figure in the gaming industry, well known for for his work in a huge number of Nintendo titles as well as his consistently entertaining presentation during Nintendo Directs and other demonstrations.
