Red Dead Redemption 2 will be entirely playable in first person mode

Get up close and personal with the frontier.

Rockstar's imminent Wild West opus, Red Dead Redemption 2, will have a first person mode available from the start and the entire game will be playable in this intimate fashion. That's the word from hands-on preview sessions now cropping up on gaming sites.

Polygon reports that changing perspective is as simple as using the touchpad on the PS4 controller to switch between three different camera settings: traditional third-person, first-person and a cinematic option which chooses the most dynamic angle on the action.

Their report also includes an illustration of how the first-person view really immerses you in the world of bandit Arthur Morgan. You'll need to care for your horse in order to get the best out of it, and that means keeping it clean. Riding through water will do the job, but you can also groom your steed by hand - and doing this in first-person view reveals the sort of insane detail that Rockstar specializes in. Details like particles of dust from your horse's coat floating into the air as you brush.

It won't just be equestrian upkeep, of course. Chases, gunfights and unarmed brawls will also take place in first-person view, making for what sounds like an absolutely absorbing wild frontier simulator.

Rockstar's previous epic, Grand Theft Auto V, also featured a first-person option but that was only added to the game when it came to next gen consoles and PC in 2014.

Red Dead Redemption 2 launches on October 26 for PS4 and Xbox One. That's a little over a month away. Yeah, you can start getting excited.
