PlayStation 4 finally joins the Fortnite cross-platform party
It's the announcement that PlayStation 4 Fortnite fans have been waiting for: Sony is finally allowing cross-platform play on Epic's hit game. The news was released in a blog post by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera today.
"Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content," he said. "We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution."
That "third party content", of course, means Fortnite first and foremost but also opens the door for cross-platform multiplayer on other titles as well.
A beta test is launching today for Fortnite, so PS4 players can jump into matches against those playing on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, Android and iOS devices. "This represents a major policy change for SIE", Kodera continues, "and we are now in the planning process across the organisation to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward."
