Play Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout battle royale for just $3 per night, or $7 for 3 nights

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 releases this weekend, bringing with it the first AAA-studio-developed battle royale mode to hit retail shelves: Blackout. But is buying it the only way to know if it's your bag? Not necessarily, as Redbox will have the game available at launch to rent for $3 a night or $7 over the whole release weekend.

While other studios are scrappy independents or are still in early access, Treyarch and Activision are dropping in with a fast-paced COD experience scaled up to a 100-player free-for-all. We, and other players around the world, got our first taste of how this mode stacks up to the competition during the open beta in September, but with changes to the way armor works, the full range of perks as well as a polished finished product, there's a lot left to play.

Friday's full release will differ in many ways from the current stable of last-man-standing shooters out there in the wild already. COD's signature run-and-gun playstyle mixes with on-the-go perks for a fast and fluid firefight experience, and the production value that comes with a studio of Treyarch's size should make for the smoothest, bug-free battler yet. But there's also an even bigger difference for some battle royale fans: a $60 entry fee.

Some of the most-played battle royales on console are free ventures with cosmetic microtransactions, so such a steep price tag could be a barrier to those trying to find out if this is the game for them. That's where Redbox comes in.

Redbox will have stock of Black Ops 4 at launch on 10/12 and offer three nights of renting for just $7, allowing you to play any mode including Blackout, for the entirety of the launch weekend. For anyone still on the fence about whether Blackout is the battle royale for them, this is the best way to take part in the excitement of the launch without committing to a mode they might not click with.
