The Legendary Cougar can be found on Gaptooth Ridge in New Austin, but before you move to track it down, you really ought to prepare. Cougars are fast, dangerous, and will pick up your scent in no time at all. Before you begin the hunt make sure you’ve crafted some Cover Scent to keep your position hidden. Snake Oil is also recommended too as this beast can soak up a lot of damage and is tricky to target, making Dead Eye a life saver. We recommend a rifle or long scope rifle for nailing the kill, but it’s worth bring a shotgun as a backup in case you’re spotted.

To find the Legendary Cougar, you need to travel to the path just north of the P in Gaptooth Ridge. Using your Eagle Eye view, look a short distance north of the trail to spot some dung you can investigate. From here, follow the trail to some blood and then a dead animal. At the end you’ll be able to find the cougar roaming the hills. Try to land a headshot with your rifle, but be ready to continue the fight afterwards as this tough cat won’t go down easily.

If you succeed in taking down your target, the Legendary Cougar will give you the legendary pelt needed to craft a new outfit, as well as the parts to make the valuable Cougar Fang Trinket that’ll boost your stamina XP gain by 10% when you next visit a Fence.

With the Legendary Cougar bested, the rest of Red Dead Redemption 2’s rare animals shouldn’t give you much trouble. If you do need some help tracking them down though, we have plenty of guides to help you. Visit our RDR2 animal locations hub to learn how to find the Legendary Buck, Legendary Grizzly Bear, Legendary Coyote and even the Legendary Moose. There are plenty of wonders hiding in Red Dead’s world too. For example, have you come across any hidden dinosaur bones?
