Minecraft Earth appears to work similarly to Pokemon GO in terms of incorporating AR technology, with players having the ability to head out and collect materials needed to build Minecraft structures in real life. No release date for Minecraft Earth has been designated, though interested gamers can sign up to receive updates and participate in the upcoming closed beta.

As added incentive for signing up, you’ll receive a special skin and Minecraft Bedrock. According to the beta page, a Microsoft or Xbox Live account is required in order to sign up, with the closed beta going live sometime later this summer. Addressing what Minecraft Earth is and how it works, the FAQ page notes:

“Minecraft Earth is an all-new augmented reality game you can play on your mobile devices that brings the Minecraft world into our universe! Through the lens of the game, you’ll be able to build creations with friends and place them in the real world at life-size. You’ll discover exciting new mobs to use in your builds. And you may need to put your survival skills to the test as you explore a new side to your neighborhood and battle Minecraft mobs in real life!”

The description hints that multiplayer features will be available alongside traditional Minecraft gameplay. Overall, we’re excited to see more AR games like Minecraft Earth announced, as pioneers like Pokemon GO showcased just how fun AR games can be. Again, if you’re interested in trying out Minecraft Earth, you can sign up right now for a chance to participate in the closed beta this summer.
