Based on our experience with Trover Saves the Universe, and feedback posted by other players, we estimate the game will take you anywhere from 3 to 5 hours to beat. As with most games, much of this depends on how you decide to play the game. In Trover Saves the Universe, you’re not only given the freedom to explore, but also to linger around in various locations.
For example, if you want to stay inside the apartment at the beginning of the game and watch TV, you totally can. If you want to hang around and talk to an interesting NPC, you’ll find they don’t repeat the same short lines over and over.
In general, Trover Saves the Universe has a surprising amount of “background content” to enjoy that can vastly increase the amount of time it’ll take you to beat if you want to experience everything, rather than rush through the game. The background content itself was touched upon in our interview with lead artist JD Cragg at PAX East 2019.
“We have hours and hours of dialogue,” Cragg explained. “You can actually just stand there and do nothing and they’ll just keep talking. They’re not repeating lines, they have a whole bunch of stuff they’ll talk about. You can even go back in a level – like in the demo you played you can go back in the apartment – and watch TV for a while.”
Based on this knowledge, you can expect Trover Saves the Universe to take 3 hours to beat if you avoid background content and exploration, 4 hours as a nice mix, and 5 hours if you want to experience everything the game has to offer. While Trover Saves the Universe is relatively short, it’s definitely worth buying and experiencing. Not only is the game absolutely hilarious, but it’s genuinely fun to play.
