Rainbow Six Quarantine may include Tarkov-style permadeath

Players will 'risk everything' as they head out on missions against an alien parasite in Rainbow Six Quarantine.

Rainbow Six Quarantine may feature Tarkov-style permadeath mechanics according to the store page description.

Ubisoft’s co-op shooter spin-off from Siege is a tempting prospect given how much fun the Outbreak event proved to be last year, and thanks to a new store page posting (thanks for the spot, PCGN) we’ve got some idea of how the game will play out.

The page states that Quarantine will see us “prepare to launch into tense, chaotic and totally unpredictable missions as you and your squad risk everything, every time you step into Quarantine.”

It looks like there will be an unpredictable element to each level of Quarantine, which could indicate a similar system to Left 4 Dead’s director, or something more severe like a Roguelite system. The last part of the description sounds particularly interesting, stating that your squad will “risk everything”. This could simply be flashy writing, but to us it sounds like Quarantine will include a system akin to Escape from Tarkov, in which players take a loadout into missions that they’ll lose permanently if they die.

In Tarkov, players will keep anything they find during the mission, provided they successfully make it out. This means choosing what you take on reach run is a calculation of risk. You want to be well equipped, but don’t want to go in overburdened and threaten losing it all. To see that come in to play in an entirely co-op shooter like Quarantine makes for an intriguing prospect, and would definitely mean the difficulty of each mission would need some flexibility.

Quarantine is being built by an entirely new team at Ubisoft Montreal, but it’ll follow directly on from Quarantine, with the store page stating that “The Rainbow Operators will face off against a totally new breed of mutated alien parasite. Infecting human hosts and their surroundings, this new enemy is more lethal and challenging than ever before.” You'll even be able to play as certain operators from Siege, as well as having the option to create a new character.

Here’s the E3 reveal trailer again in case you missed it:

Rainbow Six Quarantine will let you dive into missions in teams of three when it arrives on Xbox One, PS4 and PC in 2020.
