To start, Fire Emblem: Three Houses has an auto-save feature that will create its own auto-save file at the top of your save file list. However, it's recommended that you manually save on a regular basis. Not only do you want to manually save before exiting out of the game, you’ll also want to save before engaging in tricky spots of combat, after you make key decisions in-game, and so on.

To manually save your progress, all you need to do is tap “X” at any time during the game to open the Fire Emblem: Three Houses menu. On the menu, select “Save” to manually save your game. Again, you can do this at any point in time while playing Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It’s recommended that you not only save your game before exiting to play something else, or turn off your Switch, you’ll also want to save before and after battles.

If your battle doesn’t go the way you hoped it would and are playing on Classic mode (with permadeath enabled) you can return to previous saves and try again. The same rule applies when you’re talking with other characters, selecting skills, and so on. If you mess something up, it’s nice to be able to backtrack.

Now that you know how to save in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, we recommend reading through some of our other guides including whether you can adjust the difficulty in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, what the Max Level Cap is in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and the list of all personal skills in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
