Type 5 Heavy
And, of course, Godzilla itself. Although very similar to the Type 4 Heavy down at Tier 9, it wouldn’t be right to compile a list of great Super Heavies without including the Type 5, one of the highest alpha damage Heavy Tanks in World of Tanks. Its firepower is shared with the Type 4 in all regards but slight rate of fire and gun handling improvements, however the real changes come with its armor.
Whereas the Type 4 suffers heavily with its 200mm thick shoulder plates preventing effective angling, the Type 5’s shoulder plates are just as thick as its frontal armor at 270mm, meaning you can angle to achieve effective armor values exceeding 300mm. Its turret also receives a buff at 280mm, meaning you’re not getting through the front of this behemoth without premium ammunition or a Tank Destroyer.
…Which also happens to be the downside. While the Type 5 Heavy’s armor is very thick, it’s also very flat. No matter how much you want to angle your tank, you simply don’t have the turret shape or sloped glacis plates of the E 100 or Maus to do so effectively. One tip I can give after recently achieving the third Mark of Excellence in my Type 5 is, if they’re firing HEAT rounds at you, hand them your side on a silver platter.
This might sound hilariously stupid, “what are you thinking, you’ve gone mad!” you might be uttering under your breath while scoffing at this preposterous proposition – trust me on this. The majority of your side armor is covered in thick, spaced armor and tracks easily capable of absorbing enemy HEAT rounds, and you can almost count on your opponent thinking “My Gosh, this Type 5 has gone mad – he’s feeding me his entire broad side!”. This isn’t a flaw-proof solution as the enemy can still shoot at the area above your spaced armor or your turret face, but it works 90% of the time (citation needed).
